Competition task structure and main task module components

The tasks are performed in numerical order. Additionally, task 1 is performed when needed. Task 1 and 2 continue with material care and display maintenance until the end of the day. Always care your materials when you have the opportunity.

Module 1. Material handling and care and display maintenance, 15 p
The total competition time for tasks 1, 2 and 3 is 6 hours altogether

Handle all plant material at your unit. The material is used for presentation purposes. You may use the vessels at your unit.

Look after the plant material and how it is displayed until the end of the second competition day.

There are specific times allotted to plant care, but it can also be done during the competition tasks when needed. Some of the competition work will remain at or be returned to the competition unit after assessment, and this must be put on display. Plant care also includes caring for the competition work returned to the workstation.

If you want to leave the material in cold storage overnight, remember to see to this yourself after each competition day. Make sure to attach name tags to the vases!

The assessment of Task 1 ends on Wednesday. The task files are left at the workstations.

Module 2. Display, 13 p
Total competition time for tasks 1, 2 and 3 is 6 hours altogether

Prepare the plant material reserved for you (all of it) for display at your workstation. Compose the display in such a way that it promotes sales and takes into account the salesperson’s work. Fill in the price tags by hand. You can find price templates and lettering equipment on the equipment table.

Note that you must maintain all materials during the competition.

You can use all materials, vessels and tools on the equipment table.

The display is assessed after the end of work on Wednesday.

Module 3. Decorating a construction, 13 p
Competition time for the task 2 h

Decorate the construction, which is at your competition site, for a part of the display. The purpose of the construction is to pay passers-by attention and promote sales. Put the completed work – in your opinion – in a suitable place at your site. Note that the completed work must be movable.

Module 4. Customer Service, 10 p
Total competition time for tasks 1, 2 and 4 is 1 hour altogether

The customer orders a funeral bouquet for memorial service and tells the text for the card, attached to the funeral bouquet.

Note that the same customer also orders a flower arrangement for a table at memorial celebration (Task 7). You should serve the customer with the skills and knowledge you have when working at flower shop. While waiting for the customer’s phone call, you can care and maintenance materials and display.

Module 5. Making and pricing a funeral bouquet, 16 p
Total competition time for tasks 5 and 6 is 2,5 hours altogether

Make a funeral bouquet as a client wishes. The funeral bouquet will be laid down at memorial service.

The bouquet should be done using the spiral method or parallel stem placement. The bouquet should last for 1 day. Bouquet definition: The bouquet must have one dominating tie and it must be capable of being lifted from the vase and returned to it. Structures are possible. Place the bouquet in the vase in water; the vase is not assessed.

Price the bouquet on the provided pricing form with the retail price. If you perform a structure on the bouquet or other prices requiring handwork, price them per the time used at €48/h (incl. VAT).

Module 6. Lettering, 6 p

For the sorrow bouquet, handwrite a card using block letters, according to the text the customer has given. Attach the card to your bouquet.

Module 7. A flower arrangement for a buffet table at memorial service, 15 p
Competition time for the task 1,5 h

Make the flower arrangement as the customer wishes. Use the floral foam technique as a dominating technique, and the vessel provided. Durability requirement: 2 days.

Module 8. Surprise task, 12 p

Description of the assessment process

The assessment of every competion day will be sent by e-mail to the competitor’s trainer. The final results and ranking order will become clear at award ceremony.


Materials, equipment and work phases used and the competition area

In the competition site there is a work table, a garbage bin and materials for each competitor


What the competitor brings to the competition venue

The competitor brings along all personal tools, an own phone for the customer service task, lettering equipment, a calculator and note taking supplies. There is no access to electricity.


A sample task and assessment as a whole

Task 1 is based on previous Taitaja2018 task 1. It can be changed for the competition max. 30%.

Taitaja Competition enables the develompent of competence and competence demonstration for the competitors. The judges of the skill categories will give feedback to the competitors during the competition and they will also evaluate the competition tasks. The presentations and ideas created during the competition are in the public domain and can be used by an individual or an enterprise. The presentations and ideas can be used as they are or further developed. The Taitaja2019 event is mainly publicly funded from the semifinals to the finals. The materials produced during the event are openly availabe without any usage fees.
